On 28 February 2017 the Electoral Commissioner was informed by Her Excellency the Governor that the Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLC, Member for the East Metropolitan Region, and the Hon. Peter Katsambanis MLC, Member for the North Metropolitan Region, had resigned and their positions had subsequently become vacant.
In accordance with legislative requirements, the vacancies were advertised on Saturday, 25 March 2017 in The West Australian and The Australian. Nominations for both vacancies closed at 12 noon Tuesday, 4 April 2017.
At the close of nominations, the Electoral Commissioner had received three formal nominations for the East Metropolitan Region and four nominations for the North Metropolitan Region.

Under the provisions of s156D of the Electoral Act 1907, full re-counts of all votes cast in the most recent Legislative Council elections, held on 9 March 2013, commenced at 4pm on Tuesday, 4 April 2017, having regard for the exclusion of the Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLC in the East Metropolitan Region, and the Hon. Peter Katsambanis MLC in the North Metropolitan Region.
On completion of the count, the Electoral Commissioner declared Bill Leadbetter and Elise Irwin to be elected as members of the Legislative Council for the East Metropolitan and North Metropolitan Regions respectively. A summary of each re-count is available for download.
