Time is running out for residents in the vast North West Central electorate to enrol or update their details for next month’s by-election.
The deadline is 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday, 17 August 2022).
WA’s Electoral Commissioner, Robert Kennedy is urging all eligible persons who aren’t already enrolled, or whose enrolment details have changed, to act now to ensure they have a say in who next represents the seat in the Legislative Assembly.
“This by-election is just as important as the State election. If there’s local issues you feel strongly about this is your chance to put someone in Parliament to speak for you,” Commissioner Kennedy said.
“Eligibility to vote in the by-election is fairly straight forward, you must be an Australian citizen over the age of 18 and have lived in the electorate for at least one month.”
As with all State, Territory and Federal elections in Australia, voting is compulsory.
North West Central is WA’s largest electorate by area, covering more than 820,000 square kilometres.
It ranges from Kalbarri in the south, to Pannawonica in the North and east to the Northern Territory border. It includes the communities of Carnarvon, Exmouth, Wiluna, Meekatharra, Denham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Onslow, as well as many smaller and remote communities.
“Given the sheer geographical scope and diversity of this electorate, we suspect there will be quite a few eligible voters who aren’t yet on the roll or who need to update their enrolment details, and we’d very much like to hear from them before enrolment closes tomorrow night,” Commissioner Kennedy said.
The easiest way to apply to be added to the electoral roll or update your details if you have recently moved is to visit www.elections.wa.gov.au or call 13 63 06.
