Extra postal vote option for Exmouth and Tom Price electors

Media Release Date
Friday, 9 September, 2022

Electors in Tom Price and Exmouth will have an extra early voting option from Monday next week (12 September) when ballot boxes will be placed in Australia Post Offices in those towns to accept postal votes for the North West Central District by-election.

It means people who have just received their postal voting packages can cast their votes up until close-of-business on Friday (16th) to ensure they are received in time by the WA Electoral Commission.

WA Electoral Commissioner Robert Kennedy said the Post Office ballot box initiative was first used in the 2021 State Election, but this was the first time for a by-election.

“This is another voting option the Commission is offering people living in regional towns to make elections as accessible and inclusive as possible,” Commissioner Kennedy said.

“We hope that having the ballot boxes in those Post Offices in the last week before polling day will give electors a level of comfort that their vote will be included in the count.”

To ensure the integrity of the process, the ballot boxes will be kept behind the counter. Only authorised Australia Post team members who have signed a neutrality declaration will be able to handle ballots. Electors will hand their voting package to authorised Post Office staff who will place it in the ballot box.

At the close of business on Friday the sealed boxes will be transported to the Carnarvon Woolshed for processing and counting by Electoral Commission staff on Polling Day (Saturday 17 September).

“We thank Australia Post and their staff for their assistance in facilitating this initiative,” Commissioner Kennedy said.

Enrolled electors are reminded that applications for postal votes close at 6 pm on Wednesday, 14 September. Applications can be made online, or for people without internet access they can be requested by phoning the Commission on 13 63 06.

Postal votes need to be received by the Commission by 9 am on Thursday, 22 September 2022, to be included in the count. All relevant information on voting options and polling places can be found at www.elections.wa.gov.au/NWCentralBy-election.
