Counting of votes for the 2025 WA State Election is continuing for all districts across Western Australia.
Counts conducted on Saturday night by the WA Electoral Commission (WAEC) were indicative counts. These counts are used to make projections about likely results, however the final count of every vote cast in every district (full distribution of preferences) will not start until 19 March.
Process before the full distribution of preferences
All votes cast in the election will be transferred to the WAEC Processing Centre for the final count of votes.
This includes:
- Votes from all districts across WA
- Votes cast at interstate and overseas polling places.
- Postal votes received by us until 9am Thursday 13 March.
- Declaration or absent votes (votes cast by people voting in a district they are not enrolled in) which are matched to their district
- Provisional votes (including voters who applied to enrol to vote at a polling booth) are checked to see if the voter is eligible before their vote is admitted to the count.
From 19 March, provided all votes are returned and processed for that district, we will commence the final count of votes (full distribution of preferences) and then declare a final result for each district.
Recounts
A recount will be undertaken only after the final count of votes and before the result is declared. They will only occur where the result is close (usually less than 100 votes) or where a candidate requests a recount and can provide reasonable evidence why one should be done. The WA Electoral Commission aims to complete all results for the Legislative Assembly over approximately ten days, dependent on recount requests.
Legislative Council count
The Legislative Council count is continuing as ballot papers return to the Processing Centre. Details on the percentages won by each party or group of candidates (listed as “other” on the website) are updated daily as the count progresses. The result of which candidates will be elected to the Legislative Council is expected to be known in the first week of April.
