South West Region vacancy
On 31 August 2023, The Electoral Commissioner was informed by the Governor of a vacancy in the Legislative Council for the South West Region as a result of the disqualification from Parliament of Mr. James Hayward. The vacancy was advertised on 9 September 2023 in The West Australian and on the Commission's website and on 14 September 2023 in the South Western Times newspaper.
Nominations were open from Tuesday 9 September until 12.00 noon, Tuesday 19 September.
A qualified person, in relation to a vacancy, means a person who —
- was a candidate at the original election;
- did not withdraw from, and was not elected at, that election;
- has not become a member of the Council since that election; and
- is qualified to be elected and is not disqualified from being elected as a member of the Council
Results of re-count
A re-count of votes from the 2021 election was conducted at 2 pm, 19 September at the Commission Offices at Level 2, 111 St Georges Terrace, Perth. As a result of the re-count the Commissioner declared Louise Kingston elected as a member of the Legislative Council to fill the vacancy. See the detailed results.
Close of nominations
Nominations for the vacancy in the South West Region closed at 12.00 noon on 19 September 2023. At the close of nominations, the Electoral Commissioner had received three nominations for the South West Region from qualified persons. These consenting candidates are:
