Candidate Nominations closed on Tuesday 11 August for the nine Local Governments scheduled to hold Extraordinary Elections on 24 September 2026.
At the close of nominations, three out of the nine Local Governments will not be proceeding to election: Shire of Merredin and Shire of Dowerin were uncontested, and Shire of Upper Gascoyne was unopposed.

WA Electoral Commissioner Dennis O’Reilly said local government elections give communities a direct say in who will represent them.
“Get involved in shaping the community by casting your vote and having your say on who will represent you. I encourage all eligible voters to take the time to learn about your local candidates and consider who you want to represent you,” Commissioner O’Reilly said.
This is a postal election; voting packages will arrive in the mail by mid-September. These must be returned so that they are received by 6:00pm on 24 September. For any questions about your postal package, please contact your Local Government office or the WAEC.
Extraordinary elections are held to fill vacancies that arise between ordinary election cycles, for example, when a councillor resigns or is no longer eligible to serve, or if there were not enough candidate nominations to fill vacancies during ordinary elections.
