Nominations closed on Tuesday 20 October for the December Local Government Extraordinary Elections. At the close of nominations, the Shire of Carnarvon (Shire President, Town Ward, Gascoyne/Minilya Ward), the Shire of Coolgardie, and the Shire Esperance (Town Ward) are proceeding to election.
Candidate details are now available on the WAEC website so that voters can begin planning their vote ahead of receiving their voting package in early November. Voting packages will include candidate information, instructions for correctly completing the ballot paper, and the return deadline. Completed voting packages must be received by 6:00pm on Thursday 3 December (election day).
“The close of nominations marks an important step in the election process, giving voters certainty about who is running in their local elections so they can start planning their vote,” said WA Electoral Commissioner Dennis O’Reilly.
“I encourage eligible voters to learn about their candidates and prepare to have their say at the ballot box.”
Extraordinary elections are held to fill vacancies that arise between ordinary election cycles, for example, when a councillor resigns or is no longer eligible to serve, or if there were not enough candidate nominations to fill vacancies during ordinary elections.
